Heat Pump Incentives for Connecticut Homeowners

money-around-condenser

If you’re in the market for a new HVAC system, you’ve probably heard about heat pumps. Although heat pumps have been around for decades, they’ve recently surged in popularity. More and more homeowners are making the switch to these energy-efficient and eco-friendly HVAC systems.

Although some homeowners may be deterred by the fact that heat pumps can cost more than traditional heating and cooling systems, keep in mind that a heat pump is a two-in-one system that does both. Also, the state of Connecticut is helping homeowners by offering impressive financial incentives to make heat pumps affordable. Keep reading to learn about incentives for air source heat pumps in Connecticut.

What Is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air source heat pumps are HVAC systems that use electricity to move heat between the inside and outside air of a home. In heating mode, they absorb heat from outside air and transfer it inside. In cooling mode, it moves heat from inside to outside.

It helps to think of a heat pump as an air conditioner with the ability to also provide heating thanks to a component called the reversing valve. Just like central air conditioning, heat pumps use refrigerant in the heating and cooling processes.

What Are the Advantages of Heat Pumps?

  • Decreased utility costs: You’ll enjoy lower utility bills compared to other heating options for as long as you own the system (average life expectancy is 10-15 years)
  • Two-in-one system: You’ll enjoy all-in-one heating and cooling.
  • Flexibility: With both ducted and ductless heat pump systems available, you can go with a ducted unit that will hook up to your home’s existing ductwork. Or, choose a ductless system (also known as a ductless mini split) if your ductwork is in poor condition or your home doesn’t have ductwork.
  • Efficiency: Heat pumps are 2-3 times more efficient than standard air conditioners or furnaces. For every 1 unit of energy used to power a heat pump, up to 4 units of heat energy are supplied.
  • The eco-friendly option: Reduce your carbon footprint by emitting less greenhouse emissions

What Heat Pump Incentives Are Available in Connecticut?

Connecticut is one of the many states across the US that want to help homeowners use less energy. That means substantial incentives are available to help you purchase a heat pump for your home.

  • Single Family (1–4 dwelling units): Up to $15,000 combined incentives for qualifying air source heat pumps
  • Multifamily (5 or more dwelling units): Up to $15,000 combined incentives for qualifying air source heat pumps
  • Commercial: Up to $1,500 per ton combined incentives for qualifying air source heat pumps

In addition to the incentives supplied at the state level, tax incentives for heat pumps are also available at the national level through the IRA.
